Between one episode and the next, he went from a future Yusei who's seen everything he ever stood and hoped for crumble to dust to the point that he's literally the last man on earth, to. Now, all that said, there is one cardinal sin in this arc that, in my opinion, seriously knocks it down: the cop-out on Z-ONE's identity. I'm really not a fan of how shafted Sherry ended up being, though. The conclusion to Aporia's zetsubo! story and the absolutely brutal duel between him, Jack, Luna, and Leo is phenomenal the final revelation of Bruno's identity ties up his plot nicely. It's also the first and only time, I believe, we've seen a villain who's not trying to destroy the world through playing a card game of mythic proportions - Z-ONE is just gonna orbital drop his whole damn graveyard city on Neo Domino and let the resulting reactor explosion lifewipe the planet, and only very belatedly gets dragged into actually dueling (where, once again, my enjoyment of real-world myth references comes through as naked favoritism). The Arc Cradle is, by and large, just cool. The whole thing's a shame, too, because the Yliaster myth arc going on in the background is really neat, which leads me to. I'm also not a fan of Jack and Crow being effortlessly flattened by Team Ragnarok just so that Dueling Jesus Yusei Fudo can get more hype behind him.

There's an entire team running the world's least interesting-to-watch stall deck, and while their backstory is sweet, it's not something that fits the show's pace or is engaging to watch at all. It's well-paced, gives characters other than Yusei plenty of time in the spotlight, the villains and their immediate ties to the protagonists are fantastic, and the myth arc is both really cool in-universe as well as for its cribbing of real-world mythology.Ĭonversely, the WGRP and its leadup is irredeemable trash. The Dark Signers arc is one of the best arcs in the entire anime franchise, period.

Credit to Apdnarg, though, for being the one funny thing in that whole mess.Īnyway, since you stopped watching at the beginning of 5Ds, you haven't seen a few things that I'll opine on: Zigfried is a boring villain who plays boring duels and has all the grace of a knockoff Pegasus, and it's painfully clear that the arc was animated on less money than I spend on lunch in a week (seriously, it's where like three-quarters of all hilarious images of Kaiba's face come from). What I don't disagree with, though, is the KC GP being complete ass. That said, I think the chunk immediately after it, where the core cast head back into the Duel Monsters Spirit World, does everything the previous arc did better - although I would've absolutely loved if it had taken a leaf out of the Digimon Tamers book. Similarly, I feel like the GX desert mini-arc isn't that bad - it does a good job of both raising the stakes to show how dangerous Yubel is, developing the core cast through a combination of "we're not in Kansas anymore" and "shit just got real", as well as deconstructing Adrian's character and wiping out most of the self-hype he'd been producing prior to it. It was certainly nice to get villains with more character than Marik, even if some bits (like Mai's new dub voice) don't necessarily add to that end. Hey, I loved Waking the Dragons as a kid, and I still love it now some of the minutia of it are obviously flimsy in hindsight, though.
